Full-body EMS and post-menopausal women

Vertical Line

A July 2010 study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research analyzed the effects of full-body EMS on the resting metabolic rate, body composition and maximum strength of 30 post-menopausal women. The female participants, averaging 64.5 years of age, completed a 14 week training regimen in two separate groups:

  • 15 women completed a high intensity endurance, resistance and balance-focused training regimen
  • 15 women completed the regimen AND 2 x 20 min full-body EMS sessions w/in 10 day periods

The study concluded that 1) adding full-body EMS to a normal training regimen significantly exceeds the impact of endurance and resistance exercise on fitness and body composition, and 2) full-body EMS is an effective method for older adults to maintain lean body mass, strength, and power.
